good bye :)
I forgot to write this blog, probably because I have been extremely stressed out trying to complete lots of essays and final projects for my other classes… but this is important too, which is why I did eventually remember it. Anyways, it is nice to be able to write in my own voice again, instead of trying to think of the most astute way to form each sentence.
So, David Hoffos, from Lethbridge Alberta came to our DIVA class (as well as an artist talk for the whole school) to talk and show his art. I actually went to both because I was so excited with Hoffos’ work and his personality as an artist that I dragged my boyfriend to the artist talk the next day with hopes of inspiring him. Basically what Hoffos does is make works with installation and video projection to form these intimate scenes filled with character and charm. Some of his pieces are larger with human size or slightly smaller cut-outs and a lot of his more recent works display miniature diorama-like settings with ghostly video projections cast into the space.
His works amazed me, partly because of his techniques, which I have never seen before in any other form and partly because of his personality and subject matter. His work dealt very much with his own nostalgia and his personal interests such as classic B movies, the UFO craze of the 1990s, The Brady Bunch, his own dreams, a serious belief in Bigfoot, (which Microsoft Word automatically capitalized just now) childhood and the future. All of these themes I relate to because all of them are part of my own personality, which could be an obvious reason as to why I loved his art. However there is also the fact that he has taken these innocent interests and formed his career out of them by addressing them with art, an act with such integrity considering the pretentious nature of the ‘art world’. It also could have been his beginning of continuous failure that intrigues me, and grounds him, oppose to putting him into the category of the artistic elite like another unnamed artist that came to out DIVA class.
I am trying to describe and talk about one of my favourite pieces but I can’t quite pin point any one of them. Right now his piece “Another City” (1999) stands out but that is probably because he brought in this weird viewing device that looked like a View Master from the 1970s that displayed an image of this crazy futuristic city. In the magical viewer the image had depth and actually looked like a real tiny diorama. In real life, you apparently go into a room to see this image of the future (which I think is actually a miniature 3D scene but I am not positive) and there is a flying car projected with film into the image, as well as a lady in her apartment and people kissing. I think there is then, life size projections of people kissing around you, but that I am also not sure of. Basically “Another City” and every one of any of his pieces is best viewed in person considering they are interactive and 3 dimensional, but even without the experience of actually encountering them they still excited me, which must mean that he is an amazing artist. I’ve also watched his video on youtube a bunch of times at home, which I will post along with this blog.
i’m suppose to be writing an essay on feminism… but isn’t procrastination an essential part of the work process? it is for me. anyways… when we were learning about interactive digital works in class (for example Don Ritter’s work, who i can only remember his name because it is so close to John Ritter) i thought about this piece i made for my sculpture class that was entirely about interactivity as well as connecting art and life through consumerism. it was suppose to be a game, and the title pushed the viewer to interpret the meaning. It would also come with an artist statement if sold commercially.
i forget what the title is and apparently the concept was far from clear, my teacher hated it and i got a C. fuck that, art school is hard.
andrea zittel is one of my favourite artists that i forgot to put up here!!!
she just had a show at the vag although i kind of thought it sucked. i got the same effect going to the show as i did looking on her website. you weren’t really allowed to touch or try out any of her pieces and a lot of what she does is about making objects for everyday use. her work borders on consumerism which i like mostly because i hate the overpowering negativity the goes with consumerism and i like the idea of taking away elitism out of art….i like connecting art and life, yay marxism. however, even though this theme seems apparent in Zittel’s work, how come we couldn’t touch it and use it? that’s what it’s suppose to be for. she should open a store, i’d be more interested in that.
check out her website to see her work so this blog makes more sense because i’m too lazy to describe it, and why should i if there are pictures? ANDREA ZITTEL
yaaaaaaaaay!!!! dj shadow is coming back to vancouver! the show is on february 11th at the commodore.
its gonna be so good! or at least it should. i saw him last year and we were all worried that the show was going to be too gangsta because he had just come out with a new album with a lot of rap and not a lot of his mellow sublime beats and he had a few bad reviews, but the show ended up being perfect. also he’s going to be playing with cut chemist who i’ve seen a couple times and has always put on a good show.
im psyched.
